Pet Doors and Safety

There is a growing debate over pet doors these days. Typically, a door for pets in years past was simply a hole cut in the lower corner of the door to allow your dog, cat, pig, alligator, or any other type of four legged animal out of your home. Sometimes these doors were covered by nailing a flap of leather for weather’s sake, but that was about as fancy as you could get. However, with the growing decline of doggie doors (and cat doors) in homes today, the manufacturers have developed new ways of ensure that the doors allow your pet out and your pet—and only your pet—back inside. Noticeably, these pet doors come with a larger price tag of their leather flap predecessors, but they work considerably better.

How many people have heard about the crook that crawled into a home through a pet door and proceeded to rob a family of all their possessions while they slept? Although this sounds like an urban legend, it is sadly true, since some pets, namely larger dogs, had a pet door large enough for a fully grown man or woman to crawl through. Probably more likely than a crook crawling through successfully is your child crawling in after Fluffy and getting stuck in the pet door (don’t laugh, it has happened). For this reason, manufacturers of pet doors have upped their ante and have developed ways to stop humans and other animals from accessing the pet door without authorization.

Today’s pet doors feature magnetic locks. These locks coincide to magnets placed on your pet’s collar. When your pet goes to enter the pet door, the magnet clicks and the lock opens, allowing your beloved pet entrance to or exit from your home. However, if your playful pooch or carousing cat decides to bring home a friend, the uninvited guest will not be allowed access since it does not have the “key” to opening the door. The same goes with humans who want to avoid using the door and crawl in through the pet door. Unless they are wearing your pet’s collar, the door will not open. Every pet door has a unique magnet so you cannot try the one collar opens all pet doors approach and gain access to homes.

This latest innovation in pet doors is causing more and more pet owners to install doors for their animals. Whereas individuals were concerned in the past about having animals roam through their homes (especially wild ones like raccoons, squirrels, or opossums), they can now rest easy without having to let their pet out themselves. Furthermore, these new pet doors keep out moisture and wind, due to their special seals.

If you are wondering about the safety of pet doors, know that it is high time you installed one in your home. Having a pet door is a convenient way of allowing your pets to enjoy the great outdoors. Especially if you are leaving your pets unsupervised during the day, allowing them entry and exit from your home is critical. Fortunately, these new pet doors make everyone happy, safe, and secure.
