Sliding Closet Doors: Installation

Sliding closet doors are a great way to modernize the look of your house, by installing them in your guest rooms, hall closets, bedrooms and bathrooms. Sliding closet doors which also act as mirrors are a fine touch to any home.  For anyone with a do-it-yourself bent, sliding closet doors are a relatively simple item to install.

Most closet door measurements are a standard 80” tall, but don’t take that for granted and go out to buy a new set of sliding closet doors without first confirming the measurements of the openings. Measure the opening horizontally across both the top and bottom, and also measure the vertical of each side. The size of door you will need to buy will be the smaller of the two measurements. For example, if the left vertical measurement is 80 1/2" and the right vertical measurement is 80 1/4", use 80 1/4" for the vertical measurement when determining your door size. If you find that the door opening is not square, you will need to make a few adjustments by shimming and leveling the tracks. Any misalignments can be compensated for with trimming when the job is complete.

After you go out and make your purchase from among the choices of sliding glass doors, the actual installation process is easy.
Fit and install the overhead track against the head jamb of the door opening. If you find that the track needs to be leveled, use shims.
Attach door rollers to the tops of the doors. The rollers, which fit within the overhead track, are adjustable so the doors will hang plumb.
Install a track or a set of guides in the bottom of the door opening to keep the doors in line.

Hang the doors from the overhead track.

Adjust the tracking guides on the bottom of the doors to straddle the bottom track, preventing the doors from swinging inward or outward, or fit the doors inside a bottom track or a set of floor-mounted guides. Once inside, the doors can be lifted and hung from the top track.

Sliding closet doors are a great option for your closets as they take up less floor space than bi-fold or even the more compact multifold doors. As seen above, sliding glass doors are also easy to install. For an even more convenient model, although one that is a bit more difficult in terms of installation, you might want to consider a pocket model sliding closet doors. These variations are installed with a sheath on each side of the closet, in order to allow maximum access.  These are ideal for the master bedroom as more than one person may need access to the closet at the same time, and they also make it easier to get laundry baskets out if stored in the closet.
