Door Soundproofing

Door Soundproofing Tips for Your Home

Door soundproofing is a great solution in a number of situations. For instance, if you are a light sleeper or perhaps someone who works nights and sleeps during the day, a soundproof door can provide you with complete silence for a restful sleep. Another instance in which door soundproofing would be beneficial is for people who are into music. In this case, you might have a room in the home or even the basement where a band practices but to help block out some of the sound, this special type of door would help.

If you have hollow doors, you can be sure that sound will travel through quite easily. Therefore, for door soundproofing, you want to go with a solid door, choosing the thickest density possible. For instance, a Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is inexpensive and actually provides good sound blocking qualities. However, for the best door soundproofing with this option, you want to make sure the door fit firmly into the frame so there are no gaps for sound to travel. In addition, the doors should be sealed off, making it as if it were 40 degrees below zero on one side. Then, if the door has any gap at the bottom, use a door sweep to seal this as well.

Another option to help with door soundproofing is to purchase a super soundproofing acoustical mat. Typically, this type of mat is about one-inch thick, which is cut larger to size so the seam of the door at the frame is covered, thus sealing it. You will also find these mats with an adhesive backing, which could be removed later if you want. If your door soundproofing is still not quite right, you might go with a mass loaded curtain, which is a special acoustical curtain designed to hang over the door, as well as the doorframe.

Two challenges for door soundproofing are for sliding glass doors and garage doors. For sliding doors, you have little to no acoustical qualities. In this case, the best solution would be to purchase a better door that can block out sound or go with the acoustical curtain. For garage doors, specifically those with a segmented design, trying to soundproof can be hard. One option for door soundproofing in this case would be to use a thick soundproofing mat that is adhered to the inside.
