Retro is the style of the day, and whether you have an old house that need some new touches or a new house that you want to add an antique look to, reproduction door hardware may be the choice for you.
Reproduction door hardware refers to the huge selection of locks, hinges, knobs, pulls, deadbolts, stoppers, sideplates, levers, knockers and handles that are available in a vintage look but are manufactured new. The term also refers to hardware that has been refurbished for a new look. This decorating idea is available in many different styles and materials, but the most popular manufacturing materials are brass and glass. Reproduction door hardware can be as easy to install as any modern hardware, but in the case of the doors of your house that serve as entrances and exits it is important that you know when your door was manufactured. Doors that were built before 1940 are cut (mortised) to accommodate a mortise lock on the door’s edge- the lock is an iron or brass box that slides into the edge of the door. These locks come in all different sizes, and include both a deadbolt that is opened with a skeleton key and latches that work with a spindle. You will need to find a mortise lock that fits the size of the hole in your door. Newer doors (built after 1940) come with much larger holes, and in order to have a good appearance with your reproduction hardware you will need to cover the rest of the hole with backplates or rosettes. If you choose to go with mortise locks on your interior doors (such as the entrances to bathrooms and bedrooms) remember that they can be a complicated process, and you will want to make sure that any children or grandchildren are fully briefed in how to properly use them. My grandparents had a mortise lock on their main bathroom, and my brother caused quite the stir when he was six after locking himself and the skeleton key in with him. If you have chosen to go with reproduction door hardware, there is no doubt that you are aware of the necessity of carrying the antique them throughout the rest of your house. The door hardware should be reflected in other hardware within your home, such as cupboard door handles, window latches, and other furnishings that can be opened and shut. Reproduction door handles are a great and easy way to add a unique, retrospective look to your new home. They are also great for providing a balanced look for an older home that is just in need of some minor touching up. To create the perfect antique look, begin with your doors!
