An electronic door lock is also known as central locking or power locks. While an electronic door lock can be used for many applications such as doors and windows, it is commonly a part of a car or truck design. With this type of locking system, an upfront passenger or the driver would have the control to lock or unlock the doors for the entire vehicle, front, and back.
To lock the vehicle’s doors using an electronic door lock, just a simple flip of a switch is required. Interestingly, this type of door lock dates back to 1956 when it was first installed on a Packard. At first, the electronic door lock was used primarily for this and other luxury cars but over time, this type of door lock became standard for every automobile, regardless of make or price. Keep in mind that you can still purchase a car with the standard type of door lock but this option is not nearly as popular. When the electronic door lock was first created, it was again designed solely for the use in automobiles in unlocking doors. However, just as technology grows and expands, the electronic door lock became an option for other parts of the car to include the luggage compartment and gas tank. Today’s automobile has even more advanced technology in that once the car doors have been shut for a specific period, the doors would lock automatically or after the vehicle reaches a certain speed, the electronic door lock activates. As a part of the electronic door lock, we now see another option in the form of remote keyless entry. In this case, the driver would have a remote control on the key ring that when engaged, would activate the electronic door lock to unlock or lock the door. This option of a keyless entry has been very beneficial, especially for people who need a hands-free option of unlocking the door. The remote keyless entry for the electronic door lock has also been deemed an important safety feature. For instance, if a woman were walking in a dark parking garage after hours, she might feel ill at ease. However, being able to unlock the car from a distance so fumbling for keys is eliminated, she now feels and is safer. This keyless entry option usually features a car alarm as well. Therefore, if an individual were approached or felt threatened, a button would be pushed, thus setting of the vehicle’s horn to attract help. With the invention of the electronic door lock, it is expected that the system will only continue to get better. Again, while used primarily on automobiles, this type of locking system can be used on boats, RVs, campers, as well as doors, windows, and gates.
