Door Handles Overview

Door handles will let you into a home and get you out of a home. And to do that, you want to be able to get in and out without a lot of hassle, yet feel safe against intruders. One handle that is becoming more and more popular is the lever handles. They are simple to run: simply press down on the handle’s flat surface and push. Your elbow or your hand will open it if you are carrying something. Make sure you purchase two lever door handles, one for each side of the door.

If you want your door to lock then purchase a “free wheeling’ or “clutch” lever handle so an intruder will not open the door. Choose door handles of about five inches that curves toward the door so a sleeve or skirt won’t catch on the handle. Longer handles require less force when opening the handles. And if you don’t want to replace your current handles, purchase a lever handle adapter as it fits over the existing knobs and can be portable.

The early historical door handles originated from the iron of the local blacksmith, fastened with hand-made iron nails. Wood was also used for door handles, latches and latch fasteners.  The door handle says a lot about who lives inside the domain; they are equally important if they have charm, style and age. Early pioneer cabins used leather door hinges and latches for their handles. And their door handles spoke of who was inside and what kind of people they were.

When choosing door handles for your doors, think about the decor already there that the door handle will be matching. What decor would look good with what you want to put on your front door, or your back door, or on your bedroom? Does the color scheme patch or the design match of the new handles?  Choose a handle that curves back toward the door. You'll be less likely to catch a sleeve or purse strap on this kind of handle. Be sure to look for a handle that is at least five inches long. Longer handles are even better. You won't need as much force to open door handles with a long handle.

There are several types of door handles that are available. Some of them are handles for doors in general; cabinet knobs, lever handle, door hardware, door hinges, deadbolts, crystal door knobs; entrance handle sets; sold brass and leaded crystal; knobs and levers. Almost any of the door handles will fit the doorway of your home. It is simply a matter of choosing which one you want and how you feel it about its location in your home.

Installing door handles and latches are very easy if you know what you are doing. If not, then it will be extremely difficult. Another thing necessary will be the right tools. Phillips and regular screwdrivers are always necessary if in doubt.  When putting the door handles on the door, do not put them higher than 44 inches from the floor.
