Door Closers

Door Closers and Your Options

Anything that assists you in closing your door are door closers: round door knobs; lever handle door knobs; garage door openers; commercial automatic door closers; automatic self-locking safety system; and leather straps the pioneers had on their front door. Once you are inside or outside, then you can either lock your door or lock your door as the responsibility of the door closers are done.

You need to use door closers with simplicity and ease, not to struggle to get inside your home or to leave your home to go somewhere. So lets look at the resaons why some are easy to use and some are very, very difficult. Round door knobs are the most difficult as they can be slick and hard to turn, especially for elderly people with arthritis and similar afflictions. Their are several easier door closers to use than that one.

Bathroom doors with door closers, or handles, should not be able to be locked from the inside as it could prevent important medical intervention if the person inside fell or became ill.  The Life Safety Code requires that all doors, with door closers, be opened with a single motion whether they are locked or not for safety reasons.

A major part of door closers for today’s society is the automatic garage door opener. The reason the automatic garage door opener is so popular is: the doors are heavy to open and shut; when you get home from work, it is even more heavy; and so on. The advantage to an automated door open is you never leave your car, just use the remote control and push a button when you come around the corner. The motor that it is calling is on the ceiling of the garage and it will lift the garage door when you push the button. But some others have a chain to raise and lower the door; and are very noisy. Cheaper but noisy. Others use a steel rod to lift the door, and are called “screw-drive” systems: the rod looks like a gigantic screw. This works best with a one-piece door closer of a garage that tilts up as it begins to open.  The best door closer uses a strong rubber belt to lift the door; belt-drive units are quiet and costly.

Electric garage door openers run on electricity so make sure you can get into and out of your garage if the electricity ever fails. Keep a key somewhere for a door in case of emergencies. All garage doors have two safety features; a “contact safety reverse” that opens the door when the door hits someone; and a “ non-contact safety reverse” opens the door if someone moves under it. They run by beams of light for safety issues which are excellent safety issues for door closers.
