Decades ago the residential garage door openers were a luxury only the rich could afford. However, today residential garage door openers are commonplace and most homes which a garage have an automatic opener. Today, garage door openers are much easier to install and are more moderately priced. When choosing a garage door opener there are several things to consider.
System Type – there are a variety of garage door opener types. he first type is a screw drive system. This type of system has a device which slides along a metal rod. This type of residential door opener needs little maintenance. It is mounted from the garage ceiling. The cost of this system falls between $150 and $250 plus the cost of installation if you do not install it yourself. Another type of system is called the chain drive system. The works by having a metal chain which is responsible for lifting the garage door up and down along metal tracks. The chain drive system is cheaper than the screw drive system, averaging about $100 in total cost. The high end residential garage door openers are computer controlled. These systems use a computer to open and close the door. The whole system is mounted above the door. This is a great option if you need more head space in your garage. Computer controlled systems take up less space and therefore offer the home owner more garage storage space. Power Type – A residential garage door opener must have enough power to open and close the door. For a double door, a motor should have at least one half horse power. The majority of motors offer what is called a soft stop and start. Gradually opening and closing the door means less door maintenance and it is much quieter than other models. Speed – Most high end garage door openers work much faster than traditional models. The faster the opener the less time you spend waiting in your driving. The speed of the opener is not worth the additional cost of the more expensive residential garage door opener. Safety - All garage door openers are fitted with a safety feature which stops the door from pinning down objects or people. Once the door senses or touches something it automatically reverses itself. Today, the federal government has made guidelines that require all openers to have this safe guard. This feature works through the use of an electronic beam. In the past the issues of the residential garage door opener remote has been a problem. This is because one remote has the potential to open any number of garages along your street. Today most openers and remotes have random codes which help with security. Each time the remote is used it generates a new code. This also helps prevent theft from your garage by criminals with remote garage openers. Investing in a new residential garage door opener is an extremely convenient item that can raise your house's resale value.
