Garage Door Remote: Positives and Negatives

There is no doubt that a garage door remote can be a huge convenience in your daily life. A conventional garage door needs to be opened before you start your car, then the car must be driven out, the driver must get out, go back to the garage, close the door, and exit through a side door. The whole process is repeated when you return home, as you let yourself in, open the garage door, walk back out to your car, drive it into the garage, and then get out and close the garage door once again.

All the hassle makes you wonder why on earth you have a garage in the first place, and the garage will often end up being used to store everything but the family car. The use of a garage door remote can change all of that.

With a garage door remote, the storage of cars within the structure becomes a much less trying event. Starting your day and coming home, the hassle of climbing in and out of your car is eliminated with a simple click of the remote. Your door opens, you drive into your garage, click the remote again, and you are done your day.

There are, however, some important rules to keep in mind when you purchase a new garage door remote.

A remote is essentially a keyless entry into your home. Most people keep their garage door remote in their vehicles, and most burglars will be aware of this. Some people keep their remotes in the same way they keep their keys, with them at all times. The bulky size of the older style remotes made this an inconvenience at certain times. New styles of remotes are becoming more compact, to the point where they fit on to a key chain in much the same way as a keyless entry system for the car.

If you do have one of the older styles of garage door remote, remember to always lock the door which allows access to your home from the garage. It is just a common sense safety precaution.

Always make sure you watch your door come completely down before you drive away. Many people become lazy about with their remote, and simply point it over their shoulder as they drive away. If the door does not receive the signal, you could be leaving your house wide open to disaster.

A garage door remote also begs the question of safety- it is easy for a pet or small child to wander under the door unnoticed, or to close the door after you pull in only to have it come down on the trunk or hood of your vehicle. Purchase a remote model that has a rebound safety feature, which will activate if the bottom of the door does not make contact along its length with an even surface. This feature will sometimes make it necessary for some extra vigilance, as small objects will prevent the door from closing all the way, and it may even rebound unnoticed by the driver, who is on his way having ensured that the door was on its way down.

A garage door opener can take a lot of unnecessary hassle out of your day, but there are also several precautions that need to be understood when you begin to use one on a regular basis. Don’t let the convenience of the garage door opener lead you into compacency.
