Garage Door Parts:What is What

The installation of your garage door may have you scratching your head at the plethora of garage door parts included in the kit. However, before you become too disillusioned to complete the installation process, consider that each and every part performs a specific job. Furthermore, each of these parts work together in harmony in order to ensure that your garage door lifts and lowers on command, regardless if that command is machine or manual. If you are still wondering what all the garage door parts are that make up your door, consider the following.

By far, the most obvious of all the garage door parts is the track. There are actually two types of tracks in the overhead garage door, although they connect to form a single track. The horizontal track is the piece of the track that is mounted on the ceiling of the garage. This track allows the garage door to completely recess within the garage. Similarly, the vertical track is the track that is attached to the wall of the garage on either side of the door opening. This part of the track allows the door to rest in place when it is in the closed position. In addition to these garage door parts, you will need the track hanger and track brackets that affix the track to the ceiling and wall.

The door panels themselves will be the largest of all the garage door parts found in your kit. Since the garage door lifts each panel individually, you will need to install them individually and fix them together with hinges. It is critical that the entire garage door is level when you begin to install the garage door panels. If the door or the track is not level, the panels will not install properly and the garage door will fail to open and close. When it comes to the specific type of garage door panels, there are several options. Although heavy and difficult to properly maintain, wood door panels remain a popular option for their rich color and wood grain. However, the most practical garage door parts are made of metal to allow them to be easily cleaned and maintained.

In addition to the door panels, you will find a good many hinges in the garage door parts list for your kit. These hinges connect each individual garage door panel and allow for each panel to move freely. Typically, four hinges are used for each door panel in place, although that number can differ depending on the actual width of your garage door. Furthermore, you will need to install lift brackets on the bottom of the door on both sides of the garage door opening. These brackets will allow the door to initially lift and begin its ascent up the vertical track and down the horizontal track. These pieces of garage door parts are critical for the success of your garage door.

Finally, you will have several unique garage door parts in your garage door kit. These parts include rollers that will allow the door to glide up and over the vertical and horizontal tracks that have been previously installed. Additionally, there is some type of spring in place, either a torsion spring or an extension spring. Finally, the sheave acts as a pulley when raising or lowering the garage door. All of these garage door parts work together to ensure that your door works flawlessly.
