Before you begin the garage door installation, make sure that the garage door you have chosen is well-lubricated and that it works properly before you ever begin. If you cannot raise and lower the door by hand, it would be wise not to install it until it is checked over by a professional. The weight is supported by several things: door springs, cables, and pulleys. The opener does not do this area of work. The garage door support has nothing to do with how it raises up and down, so the garage door installation needs to be set in motion before you begin.
When preparing to order the garage door installation, make sure you measured the doorway correctly for an ensured fit. First, measure the door opening width and height in feet and inches to determine the size of door needed. The rough opening will be the same size as the garage door. Then measure for side room: 3-3/4" is required for each side of vertical track installation (for standard extension spring, standard torsion spring, and the EZ-SET torsion spring system) and 5-1/2" for the vertical track system for the EZ-SET Extension Spring System. The next step is to measure the headroom, which is the space from the top of the garage door opening (jamb header) to the lowest point in the ceiling above it (floor joist). Ten inches is required for the standard extension spring or EZ-SET Extension Spring System and 12" is required for the standard torsion spring and EZ-SET Torsion System. If you have limited space, you will need to order special hardware. If you are installing an automatic garage door opener as part of your garage door installation, the headroom measurement will be different. Before you begin, make sure the garage door installation has an accurate tool and material checklist: garage door opener, stepladder, pencil, steel measuring tape, electric drill, drill bits, hammer, screwdrivers, adjustable wrench, pliers, lumber (1" and 2" for shims, 1' x 6' mounting board ), and a steel angle for reinforcing lightweight garage openers. Make sure all ropes and cords are out of the way that are attached, so they don’t tangle around you and lift you up with the door as it rises. Also, check your state and local building codes before starting the garage door installation for safety measures. When you begin working on the garage door installation, try to reinforce the fiberglass or metal garage doors before installing an opener or working on it in anyway. This will prevent damage to the door, also ensuring that the safety reverse will work. Make sure you are doing the garage door installation parts on the garage door high enough so people won’t run into it; try for at least 7 feet from the floor. |
