When it comes to exterior wooden doors, we have seen some amazing technological advances in the past 30 years. It used to be that while wooden doors were popular, they were also a challenge in that they warped. However, today we see most doors being designed as “maintenance free” to include the introduction of new materials and processes that keep doors going for years and years, looking good while being fully functional.
Wooden doors look great and for the most part, are strong. However, the traditional wooden door required a tremendous amount of work to keep it looking great and working, as it should. Unfortunately, over time moisture would penetrate the wood, causing the wood to break down and rot. In addition, most wooden doors should be repainted about every three to five years but homeowners get busy and soon, more time has passed, which results in damaged wood. If you want to spruce up your home, we suggest you begin with the doors, looking again at the newer wooden doors. What you will find are wooden doors that have a clad exterior, which helps to protect the wood from harsh elements. This type of exterior can be made from a number of things to include aluminum, fiberglass, vinyl, or other various composite materials. Just remember that while clad exteriors for wooden doors have advantages, they also come with disadvantages. Another option for wooden doors is the inside of the house. In this case, you would have a number of choices, again each with pros and cons. Typically interior wooden doors are less than the standard three-foot exterior door, usually 30 to 32 inches. For choices, there are solid, hollow core, solid core, folding, bypass, gliding, and pocket wooden doors. Solid wooden doors can be smooth or paneled and have a nice appearance. These doors offer the best soundproofing. Hollow core wooden doors are common because of the low cost. The void in these doors is filled with something like a compressed cardboard. Solid core wooden doors are similar to the hollow core door but stronger and with better soundproofing qualities. Folding and bypass wooden doors are usually used for closets or small rooms. Gliding doors are on tracks, usually seen in master suites as French or sliding doors. Finally, pocket wooden doors are used for tight spaces. |
