Security Door Choices

Written by T. Agee
My wife and I faced the same situation as many young newlyweds when we began our life together about six and a half years ago; we were long on dreams and short on cash. Following the logical consequence in such circumstances, we looked for a house that was relatively cheap in order that we did not drain our account just on the mortgage payment every month. The most affordable housing, of course, turned out to be in the least desirable area of town. We decided to brave it, as we live in a small enough city and really, how bad could the crime really be?

It turned out that bad was pretty bad. To our surprise, the weakest spot in terms of gaining entry turned out to be not windows but the back door that led out to the year, bordering on a green belt. Our wooden back door was kicked in a total of three times in three months, when my wife and I decided to look into the option of a security door.

When we went shopping for a security door, we found that there is a lot more to them than the simple appearance of a reinforced screen door. Security doors are available in quite the range, and the mitigating factor for us turned out to be the pricing.

You also might be surprised by the range in availability of doors designed to keep intruders out. There is a door designed for every entrance in your house, from steel patio doors to fashionable wrought iron doors and gates that can be used for your front door without giving it the look of a maximum security prison. There are also several types of iron bar arrangements available for making your windows more secure.

Because our main point of entry as far as thieves were concerned was through a door that was mostly invisible as far as passersby and guests, my wife and I opted for a relatively low-cost ($300) iron bar-model gate. This gate was pretty easy to install in front of the basement door, and makes it impossible for would-be break-and-enter miscreants to kick our door in.

If you live in an upscale home in a dodgy neighborhood, you may want to consider looking into the option of purchasing a security door for any entryways you might have.  A security door need not be a straight steel, windowless model. There are many models available that do not appear to be security doors at all, which might come as a shock for any criminals who target your home. You can even purchase security screen doors, which will not prevent thieves on their own, but might prove enough of a deterrent if you are the kind of person who likes to leave your door open on hot summer days to let a breeze through.
