Exterior Door Theory and First Impressions

The exterior door of any house is the gateway to the journey through a house. It is actually the first part of the house that anyone sees up close and examines carefully (while waiting for you to answer the door). Therefore the exterior door is a key component in defining the tone, mood, and style of the rest of the house. An exterior door is the focal point of the front yard and all landscaping should compliment the front entrance.

Entry doors are often picked as an after thought to everything else but should in fact be one of the first things picked for any new construction. Color, material, and shape are all important things to consider when choosing your exterior door.

Due to the outside exposure, an exterior door tends to show wear and tear must sooner than other doors. Traditional doors and doors of the past were made out of wood. This is a great material because it is natural and offers a warm look to the whole house. Unfortunately it is also extremely vulnerable to the elements.

The combination of rain and sun can made an exterior door crack, warp, and bleach. On top of that sun light break downs the wood's intrinsic structure. Year after year can make any wood exterior door weak and eventually useless. Keeping your entry door new and tidy is important for the over all look of the house.

Door technology has changed a great deal in the past decade. There are now literally hundreds of options for entry doors. These range from the old fashion wood doors into high tech options like fiberglass and steel. Instead of having to buy a door and frame it yourself, most doors today come pre-framed. All you have to do is pull the old door frame out and re-insert. This can be done in less then an hour and can be accomplished by the home owner. Now there is no excuse to have a damaged exterior door.

A great option for home owners looking for the wood door “look” but wanting something more secure and long lasting is composite doors. These are doors which appear to be wood but have a steel door within them. his type of door is much more durable and lasts longer than all wood conventional doors.

The life of an exterior door can be influenced by how well you take care of it. Doors like all parts of a house must be regularly maintained. Be sure when the season change to wash down and dry all exterior doors. Make sure all screws are tightened especially the hinges. Hinges also need to be lubricated annually. Having a well maintained exterior door is a good reflection of how you care for your house, family, and friends.
