Entry Door: Choosing the Right One

To update or make a dramatic statement, you might consider chanting out the entry door of your home. Not only will a new door look incredible from the outside but it will also improve the home from the inside. Today, the market is flooded with all types of styles for the entry door so you are sure to find something you like but also a door that enhances the style and architectural elements of your home.

The key of course is choosing the right entry door, one that will look nice, be easy to maintain, and provide the level of security needed. Since the entry door is the first thing people see, it should have character and style. However, the entry door is also exposed to the elements so it has to be built to last. While you will still find a number of beautiful wood doors, we now see people going with fiberglass or metal, which will not warp or crack. Remember, there are literally hundreds of types of styles from which to choose.

One of the most popular types of entry door is known as the “entry system”. In this case, you are buying a pre-hung door already in the frame. This type of entry door is designed to interlock with the threshold.  Then to help keep hot or cold air out you would find weather-stripping included that goes around the perimeter of the door. Additionally, the entry system comes with the lockset and hinges, saving you effort and money on buying separate hardware. Not only is this type of entry door highly efficient, it is also affordable.

You will also discover a trend when it comes to the entry door in that most are now made from different or a combination of materials. For instance, a modern fiberglass or steel door might actually be constructed with a wood frame. You will even find that many styles of entry door are designed with a foam insulation core, which acts as a barrier for noise, as well as the outside elements.

With your new entry door, you will find that you have choices of paneled or flush designs. For paneled doors, the design would include rectangular recesses, which are then framed by vertical stiles and horizontal rails. On the other hand, the flush style of entry door is designed to be flat, and smooth on the inside and outside. The look is usually more of a decision based on personal preference than anything else.

Finally, although fiberglass and steel are viable options, you will still find that most people prefer wood. In addition to being gorgeous, wood comes in a wide range of choices to include cherry, walnut, maple, fir, oak, mahogany, and more. Just keep in mind that if you go with a wood entry door, you will need to make sure it is maintained with a quality finish.
