Overhead Door Installation

Undoubtedly, the most common types of garage door installed in homes, barns, and garages these days in an overhead door. An overhead garage door is one that raises and lowers by either rolling up into a top track mounted on the ceiling of your garage or just lifts and recesses back onto a top track. Both styles are popular, but the panel type overhead garage door is more commonly found due to its tremendous space saving capabilities. These panels roll back when lifted, so the opening of the door needs only a few inches in order to correctly work. If you are looking to purchase an overhead door for your home, consider the installation process for both types of ceiling mounted doors.

The first thing you should consider in the installation process of an overhead door is whether or not you are technically able to handle the installation process safely and securely. There are professionals that install all types of garage doors and garage door openers for a living, so consider utilizing your local phone book or look up a reputable professional on the internet if you are unwilling to complete the installation process on your own. Also, consider asking around to see if your friends, family members, neighbors, or co-workers can recommend anyone who can professionally install your overhead door.

Installing an overhead door is not terribly difficult, although some steps in the process can be awkward and will most definitely require additional assistance. Also, if you are replacing an existing overhead garage door that has a torsion spring, be careful to not remove the spring by yourself and seek professional assistance. A torsion spring is located directly above the garage door and is actually a pair of springs on either side of the center bracket. These torsion springs are incredibly dangerous and can cause significant harm if attempted to remove without professional tools. However, if you are installing a new overhead door for your garage, this hazard is nonexistent.

Begin by assembling the tracks that serve as a rail for the garage door to slide open and closed. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions when installing the tracks to ensure the correct pieces and sizes are connected. Also, your garage door kit may come with brackets that attach the tracks to the wall. Be sure to attach all pieces before you begin assembling the individual panels of the overhead door.

Once you have installed the tracks for your overhead door, begin installing the panels. Start one panel at a time and ensure that both sides are securely in place before advancing. You will need to fasten any hinges present on these panels to keep them firmly in place when the door becomes operational. It is essential that the door and the tracks are level at all times. If your door is not level, remove the components and reinstall level. Once all the door panels are installed, finish off by attaching the horizontal track to the ceiling or joists of your garage. Once this is completed, you can choose to install a motorized open to raise and lower your overhead door or do the task manually.
