Probably one of the most dramatic entrances a person can create on a home or business is with a cast iron door. From a historical and architectural standpoint, the cast iron door creates a sense of strength and power while making an incredible statement. Associated with the cast iron door you will often see a doorknocker, which has been around since the beginning of history, first as a functional component of the door and then as a decorative element, adding to the architectural style.
Also made from cast iron, the doorknocker enhances the appearance of the cast iron door, giving it character and charm. Simple doorknockers made from wrought iron were designed with a ring and plate during the 17th and 18th centuries, primarily in Europe and the Americas. Then in the 19th century, as the cast iron door remained popular, doorknockers became even more important, adding aesthetic value and architectural significance. Although the cast iron door is simple, it is still considered attractive. Prior to the invention of air conditioning, people left doors and windows open to allow fresh air into the house. However, with a gust, the door would slam. Therefore, people began using various items to keep the door or window propped open such as a stone or brick. However, over time, the idea of creating a cast iron door and doorstop came up, which resolved the problem. Soon, an entire art revolution surrounding the cast iron door began whereby you would see beautiful buildings such as banks, museums, and even historical homes using the cast iron door, all being a part of the Cast Iron Art age. Today, the cast iron door is not quite as popular as it was at one time but we see in some areas of the country and in some industries, this type of material coming back. In addition to looking impressive, the cast iron door also adds an element of security, something we care more and more about in today’s society. Although the cast iron door is seldom used for the construction of new homes, you will find some areas in industrial sections of the city finding cast iron doors, doorknockers, and doorstoppers at salvage yards. While the cast iron door is not for everyone, it certainly had its moment in history and today, is making somewhat of a comeback for some types of businesses. |
