Remodeling a kitchen is so much fun, but also so expensive. A fast, easy, inexpensive way to change the look of your kitchen is to replace the cabinet doors. Replacing kitchen cabinet doors is a quick and easy home improvement project that can bring you extra money if you’re looking to sell your home or extra enjoyment if you’re not. Most cabinet doors are wood, but many have glass fronts and some are even stainless steel. Regardless, they can all be installed by following the same simple steps.
Start by removing the old cabinet doors. If you need to paint or otherwise re-finish the existing cabinets to match the new cabinet doors or vice versa, now is the time to do it. Once the cabinet or cabinet doors are dry, evenly space and attach hinges to the back of the doors. Generally, you only need two, but if there are glass panes in the cabinet doors or they are otherwise heavy, use three hinges. Next, measure where the top edges of the cabinet doors will fit against the cabinet and mark it. It may be helpful to use a chalk line. Place the new doors over the cabinet openings and align them with your marks or chalk lines. Mark on the cabinet the location of the top hinges on the doors. Open the hinges and align the cabinet doors with the hinge marks you have made. Affix the doors at the hinges. After the cabinet doors have been hung, attach any hardware and erase your measurement marks from the cabinet. After installing new cabinet doors, you will need to install cabinet drawer fronts to match. Doing this is just as easy as installing the cabinet doors. First, pull out the drawer and empty it. If the drawer front is attached with screws, unscrew it. If it is glued on, cut the overhanging edges (those parts that come in contact with the cabinet) off of the drawer face and sand your cuts. If you were able to remove the front, set the new front in its place, check to make sure it’s evenly placed, and screw it in. Be careful not to screw all the way through the drawer front. If the old drawer face remains, cover it with wood glue and affix the new front, again making sure that it is evenly placed. Let dry before replacing the drawers in the cabinet. Installing new cabinet doors is an easy and inexpensive way to remodel your kitchen. Replacement cabinet doors can be bought at any home repair warehouse or kitchen and bath store and you can install them yourself in a few short hours. Whether you’re upgrading the kitchen because you want to sell your home or are just want to remodel it for yourself, start with the cabinet doors and you may find that there’s little more that needs to be done. |
