Door Accessories: Theme and Design

Most people don’t think about it, but there is a lot more to doors than a simple plank of wood, and the additions go beyond design patterns! Doors would not be functional without some basic door accessories, and door accessories can also add to the overall theme and design of your home.

Door accessories are available in so many designs, models, and sizes that it would be impossible to list them all. A rising trend is the use of antique-style accessories that have been refurbished or made specifically to give a door an old-style feel.

When shopping for accessories for your door, you should begin with the basics. Door knobs seem so basic that they go without saying, but the fact is that many door purchases will not include a knob. You should decide on the style and shape you would like the knob to come in. Again, there are many choices beyond the round, turn knob of tradition. Some beautiful knobs are available in glass or brass designs, and the patterns and inlays are infinite. Many knobs will also include a locking mechanism, either by a key or a simple push-in method that is the standard on interior doors.

There are several alternatives to the door knob. You may want to consider a door handle, which is grasped in the hand while the thumb depresses a lever to open the door. Locks are again incorporated into these door accessories, and usually take the form of a deadbolt operated with a key. Handles can help to give the impression of a more secure, even a larger door.

To protect your walls from the swinging door and the knob or handle, it is essential that you install door stoppers. Door stoppers are easy to incorporate door accessories, and will save you a lot of grief when it comes to fixing patches made by the door in your drywall through prevention. Door holders are a nice complement to the doorstop, and are ideal for holding screen doors in place so they do not fly open in breezy conditions.

Further security can be obtained through door accessories such as bolts or chain latches that attach to the door on one side and your interior wall on the other.

You may want to add a measure of convenience to your exterior door by including a mail slot. Mail slots add some ease to your day by eliminating a trip to the mailbox, and your mail is ready at your feet when you come in the door. Just make sure that the slot is off to the side so you don’t step all over your packages when you arrive home!

Some other door accessories to consider to spruce up your entrance are bells, house numbers, and viewers or windows. Door accessories are dually functional, offering convenience, an enhanced appearance, and security.
